Quotes are a great way to build and tune your mental models. They might not be perfect, but they’re much better than ones you’d otherwise pick up from your circumstances, friends or even *gasp* family. At the very least, they make for interesting food for thought, if you’re into that sort of thing.

But really, why should you care? It’s simple: the person with better mental models (a.k.a accurate world-view) usually wins. Here’s the chain of influence the way I think it unfolds: models ⇒ thoughts ⇒ strategy ⇒ actions ⇒ environment ⇒ results.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to consider quotes as distilled versions of books. They capture the essence of it. This is great because I don’t need to spend time reading the entire book in order to extract value from it.

Hint : I’m not a big fan of traditional reading.
